Types of Available Data

Kentucky Cancer Registry recognizes four categories, levels, or types of data that can be released for cancer surveillance and research purposes.

  1. Level I studies involve reports of aggregate data stratified by non-confidential data fields (i.e. case counts by race, sex, county, etc.).
  2. Level II studies involve individual, record-level data with no personal identifiers. The data may include geolocation information (with IRB approval), but will not include name, street address, phone number, social security number, date of birth, any reporting facility or physicians involved in the patient's care.
  3. Level III studies involve individual, record-level data that may require record linkages or chart reviews. Personal identifiers may only be released with appropriate IRB approval. The study may not involve direct patient contact (see Level IV application).
  4. Level IV studies involve individual, record-level data with personal identifiers, to be used for research purposes that require direct patient or family contact.

All applications will be reviewed by the Kentucky Cancer Registry review committee, which is scheduled to meet twice a month. Once your application has been received, Dr. Jaclyn McDowell will notify the principal investigator when the application will be reviewed by our committee. Please allow at least two weeks after approval for the completion of your data request.
